OFA Eye Clinic

To reduce the incidence of orthopedic and genetic disorders in dogs, the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) was founded as a not-for-profit organization. They created a health registry to help breeders make informed decisions on their breeding stock with an aim of improving the health of man’s best friend.

The OFA Eye Certification Exam is an eye screening as opposed to a comprehensive eye exam performed by a board certified (AVCO) veterinary ophthalmologist roughly 30 minutes after pupil-dilating drops are administered into the dog’s eyes. Owners can submit the exam results to the OFA to be included in the Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) to be issued a certification number for dogs that passed their exam. Dogs must be over 12 months old or older on the day of the exam to qualify for a certification. Certifications are valid for 12 months from the date of the exam.

The New River Valley Kennel Club offers an OFA Eye Clinic for $50.00 USD (per dog) in Newport, VA every August in conjunction with the Mountain Valley Cluster. Pre-registration is required prior to the event. Spots are limited to 50 dogs and issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
