CODE OF ETHICS

The members of the New River Valley Kennel Club, Inc., in order to protect and promote the advancement of purebred dogs, as well as ethical kennel practices, do hereby set forth this code of ethics.

  1. Each member has as an obligation, the protection of the best interest of purebred dogs and shall conduct himself in a manner reflecting credit on himself, his breed, and the Club.
  2. Each member shall familiarize himself with the AKC rules regarding the keeping, registration, sale, and transfer of dogs and the procedures regarding exhibiting dogs. It shall be considered unethical to knowingly violate these rules and regulations.
  3. It shall be considered unethical for any member to engage in the wholesaling of litters of puppies or the selling of puppies or breeding stock to or through such places as pet shops, catalogue houses, or other commercial sources of distribution.
  4. It shall be considered unethical for any member to knowingly violate any of the accepted ethical practices in breeding dogs, selling dogs, or holding dogs at public stud.

    Misrepresentation of the health of a puppy or adult dog for sale shall be considered unethical. All dogs shall be in good health and condition at the time of sale. Buyers should be provided with a full health record, feeding and care instructions, pedigree, and a written contract stating all guarantees. Any dogs sold with disqualifying faults or other unsoundness shall be sold with the recommendation that the animal should not be bred and the prospective buyer made aware of such faults in writing.

    All males offered at stud shall be in good health and physical condition and free from disqualifying faults. A written stud contract shall be used. Males shall be used selectively and not solely for profit, disregardinq the qualities of the puppies.

    All bitches used for breeding shall be in good health and physical condition and free from disqualifying faults. Bitches shall not be overbred for profit, disregarding the health of the bitch or the quality of the puppies.

  5. All advertising shall be honest and forthright and may not in any way be misleading.
  6. No member shall use membership in this club for personal gain.
  7. All members are encouraged to continue to educate themselves in all aspects of purebred dogs and to exhibit and support the sport of dogs. Membership in national parent breed clubs and regional breed clubs is encouraged.
